Benefits of Walking

Are there benefits to walking? Many people including me walk for exercise and their a numerous benefits for your health.

I personally like to walk outside and not inside on a treadmill, regardless of the weather I usually walk every day at least 3 but usually 4 miles.

Research by The American Heart Association has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:

  • Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Improve blood lipid profile
  • Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well being
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes

I also find it helps with depression and lowering stress levels.

Take a look at your surroundings when you walk and really get in touch with the energy of nature natureThink positive thoughts and when you find yourself drifting off thinking about all the things you have to do, bills you have to pay and chores, errands and everything else life is throwing at you, Re-focus your thoughts by looking around at nature and breath the energy from the trees, animals, birds, grass.  The difference in the way you feel will change the way you walk.

Smile as you walk, you will be surprised how light on your feet you become when you are smiling.

If you walk by the beach do some of your walking in the sand, especially when you finish your walk, take your shoes off and walk barefoot, feel the sand beneath you, let the water run over your feet allowing mother nature’s element of water to soak into you.

Look at the sea, it is never same every day and the combinations of the sky and the water together are amazing. beach

Wherever you walk, you will get the most benefits when you are focused on the positive and not the negative.

Walk when you take your breaks at work, you can go for a stroll and the fresh air and nature will help you get through the rest of your day.

You have heard the say “Take a walk and clear your head” well it is a fact, you can clear your head when you take a walk.

Remember the benefits of walking and if you do not already walk perhaps it is time for you to fit it into your schedule.
